Evonik launches new aldehyde scavenger for polyurethane applications to improve air quality inside c

One of the biggest challenges facing the automotive industry is how to remove odors from the interior of a car. With the key requirement to reduce aldehyde emissions, Evonik has developed a new second-generation aldehyde scavenger, ORTEGOL® LA 3. This additive is specifically designed to reduce formaldehyde and acetaldehyde levels in automotive molded foam, helping to reduce "new car smell".

Increasing consumer demand for neutral odors in vehicles has led additive formulators like Evonik to place increasing emphasis on developing modern, high-performance scavengers that enable automotive OEMs to reduce VOC and FOG levels. The industry's ongoing efforts to reduce aldehyde content must also be balanced with maintaining good processability and the final quality of polyurethane (PU) foam products. Evonik's new detergents work by reacting with aldehydes - this ensures easy processing without compromising the quality of the polyurethane application.

Roland Hubel, head of Evonik's Polyurethane Additives for Flexible Foams business, said: "With strong pressure from Asian consumers to completely eliminate the 'new car smell', reducing odour in the cabin has become a key focus area for us." We have a wide range of A portfolio of additives, including low odor and low VOC surfactants, as well as our newest NE (Negligible Emission) line of catalysts and aldehyde scavengers, such as ORTEGOL® LA 3, to help our customers meet today's more stringent emissions requirements. "

Recommended for use with DABCO® NE 300 and DABCO® NE 1550 or DABCO® NE 1600, ORTEGOL® LA 3 is unique in that it can scavenge several different aldehydes.

It can remove a variety of aldehydes (depending on the formulation). ORTEGOL® LA 3 is registered for use in all major regions, including the US (TSCA), Canada (DSL) and Europe (REACH). Furthermore, ORTEGOL® LA 3 does not cause emissions in VDA 278 or VDA 276 (indoor test).

To support these new low-VOC and low-emission solutions, Evonik has established its own odor testing team in Shanghai, China to facilitate its in-house odor testing during new product development and to better support customers in the region.
