Polyurethane: The Core Secret of High Performance Materials

Polyurethane (PU) is a type of polymer material formed by the polymerization of diisocyanates and polyols through chemical reactions. This unique chemical synthesis method endows it with highly customized characteristics, and manufacturers can precisely control its mechanical, thermal, and chemical properties by adjusting the formula and processing technology, making it present a variety of forms from soft elastomers to hard and rigid bodies. For example, in the manufacture of mattresses, soft polyurethane foam can fit the body curve and provide comfortable support; In the industrial field, rigid polyurethane can be used to manufacture high-strength mechanical components.

From a microscopic perspective, the amino ester groups in the polyurethane molecular chain endow it with excellent wear resistance, corrosion resistance, and weather resistance. In practical applications, the multifunctionality of polyurethane is fully demonstrated: as an insulation material, its thermal conductivity is as low as 0.02W/(mK), only one-third of that of traditional insulation materials; When used as a coating, it can form a dense protective film, significantly improving the aging resistance of the substrate. Taking a well-known automobile brand as an example, the use of polyurethane coating on its body has increased the salt spray corrosion resistance time from 500 hours to 1200 hours, effectively extending the vehicle's service life.
